We did go to the pediatrician for his 9 month well baby check-up and I'm happy to report he's doing fine. Sadly, I can't report perfection at this visit, because my pediatrician did say he's a bit behind in his moving skills. He's not so far behind that we have to do physical therapy or anything, but we are supposed to work on things like pulling to stand and sitting up on his own. She's not concerned that he's not crawling, since that's not technically a developmental milestone, but I think it all goes together.
Connor is just not that interested in moving. She thinks it's probably because of his size, which she is not worried about either. (No baby diets just yet). He weighed 23 pounds, 3 ounces and is 29 1/4 inches long, which puts him between the 75th and 90th percentile for weight and height. This is what he's been at for most of his life, so she's not worried, but that could be slowing him down. For now, we are doing some baby work outs.
He's already made some progress at pulling himself to standing. You can rest him on your leg in front of a window sill and he'll pull up. It's pretty cute. We'll just keep working. I'm sure he'll get to moving eventually. I guess I just have to institute a little more tough love to push my potted plant into action. He still normally fusses when we do these little work outs, so I feel bad, but I know it's good for him.
Everything else was right on track. He's verbal skills are good. He's now doing a lot more two-consonant babbling. This week it's ba-ba-ba-ba-ba. All day long. She says, that is his attempt to talk. Is Mama and Dada next? I hope so.
He is also leaning towards things with his arms to show he wants something and opening his arms to be picked up.
His pincer grasp is also getting a lot more fine tuned and he can pick up even slippery things like banana pieces or grape chunks. She said there is no rush to move him off purees if he still likes them, so for now that is the bulk of his diet. We have been offering him more and more table food, but he always gets a full serving of fruits and veggies in a puree form at every meal.
He now has 8 teeth, which is pretty remarkable at 9 months. I say, the sooner we get them in, the sooner we'll be done with dreaded teething. Bring 'em on.
The pediatrician did say that overall he looked great, happy, and healthy so that's good. Hopefully we'll have more moving progress to report next month.
As I said earlier though, the doctor's appointment wasn't our only excitement on Friday. We also had a little get together to watch A&M play in the NCAA tournament and then have a little barbecue, since the weather was soooo nice. It was clear and 75 all day. I managed to get everything prepared, but man is it hard to get hors d'oeuvres ready, dinner prepped, and clean the house with a little one. I told Jeff, the next time we host we need to do it on a Saturday when he can help.
It was worth it though, because the food was yummy, A&M won, and the company was great.
The good news too, was that we had the rest of the weekend to relax. Saturday a front came through and it rained all day. Jeff was a dream and let me go back to bed after feeding Connor so I got to sleep uninterrupted for another 3 hours. It was heaven. I haven't been able to do that in 9 months.
When Connor got up from his nap, we all braved the rain and went out to lunch, since we definitely didn't feel like cooking. We had sinfully delicious pizza and we even had dessert. Sweet...literally. That evening was nice and relaxing too. We put Connor to bed and I made some more purees and did some laundry and we watched Up in the Air. It was pretty good, but I don't quite see what all the hype was about.
Today is really cold, but the sun has come back, so hopefully we'll bundle up and get outside for a nice walk. The rest of the day, I'm guessing we hang at home and continue to unwind. Poor Jeff is fighting a sinus cold or infection, so he's not doing so well, but hopefully he'll take the rest of the weekend to recuperate.
Lindsey and her daughter Allison popped by on Friday for our BBQ. When they arrived, Connor was still napping and Allison (almost 2) kept asking for Connor. It was adorable.
As we were waiting for our dessert we took Connor out of his high chair to play. Jeff had him thoroughly entertained with a plastic yoda toy. It was really sweet.
