He is eating more "real" food, which is kind of cool. We have started breaking up little bits of bread, pasta, chicken, beans and cheese. I keep meaning to try egg yolks, but I haven't yet. He was only so-so with chicken at first, but he seems to be getting it.
All of these foods fall into the "finger foods" category and Connor is really seeming to enjoy feeding himself, which mostly consists of grabbing a handful of whatever I put on his tray and stuffing it in his mouth. It's not the most graceful technique, but the delicate pincer grasp (pointer finger and thumb) will come soon enough. For now, Jeff and I are both proud when he gets the food in his mouth. It's really cute to watch.
This month, he can try all sorts of new items. His newest fruits are blueberries and melon. His newest veggies are asparagus and white potatoes. There is lots more to try though. We have fun experimenting.
I have continued to make all of his food from scratch with the exception of organic apple sauce and prunes. I always like to have a jar of prunes on hand in case Connor is acting a little stopped up.
It's really not that difficult to make the food and since my Christmas food processor, it's really been a breeze. You just cook the fruit or vegetable, puree it, divvy it up into an empty ice cube tray, and freeze it. Then pop out the cubes, stick them in a freezer bag, and low and behold, you've got 16 servings of food all ready to go.
They make all natural, no sugar added baby food, but it's so expensive. This way, I can save some money, have the peace of mind that Connor isn't eating sugar or chemicals, and it's super convenient.
Besides his branching out into the wide world of food, Connor is also starting to show signs that he might be interested in crawling in the next month or so. He is starting to really push up and sometimes he gets up on his hands and knees. He only pushes backwards at the moment, which is super frustrating to him when he's reaching something ahead of him, but it's kind of cute to watch. Some other Mommy friends have told me, pushing backwards is often the first thing they do, so I'll keep you posted. No real action yet, but for the first time, I can actually picture him crawling, whereas before, I literally could not even fathom it, since he had absolutely no interest in it. He still doesn't like to practice tummy time for more than a few minutes at a time, so progress will be slow, but he's trying, which is cute. It makes me realize though, our house is soooo not babyproofed. Stay immobile a little while longer buddy.
Connor has also been showing us that he can stand up for little bits at a time. He doesn't pull himself up, but you can rest his hands on a window sill and he'll stand there a few seconds without assistance. It's so weird seeing him upright. I can't even imagine him walking.
His personality is still about the same, although his fussiness has really subsided. Now he's really only fussy if he's teething, he's bored, or he's tired. Of course sometimes I don't know what's wrong, but it is much more common for him to be chill and happy than for him to be fussy now.
Speaking of chill, I would probably describe him that way most of the time. He is still really serious when we are out and about. People try to no avail to get him to smile, but I guess he's just taking it all in. Maybe he's going to be a thoughtful artist. Who knows. For now though, he's certainly an introvert.
Probably the biggest update that Jeff and I are nervous to even report, is that Connor is FINALLY starting to spit up less. I wouldn't say that he doesn't spit up at all, but it's certainly reduced some. Occasionally he'll have a bad day or a bad couple of spit ups, but for the most part, he is really doing so much better. I guess his gut is finally maturing. Good job buddy. Man, his spitting has not been fun. I will be so happy to not smell curdled breast milk all day long. Gross I know, but it's my life. Welcome to my world. :)
Connor doesn't go back to the doctor until next month, but unofficially he weighs nearly 23 pounds. He's still a big boy and I think 2 pounds are in his cheeks. Everyone who sees him says, "Wow, look at those cheeks."
I love him at this age. He sits and plays with his toys and if I walk into the kitchen real quick, I can count on him being right where I left him. Even though it will be super cute when he starts crawling, I am definitely enjoying my adorable little "potted plant." He is just so sweet at this age. Even though he is Mr. Serious out and about or around new people, he is totally smiley and jovial around me and Jeff. It's so cute. He basically smiles at us every time we smile at him. It just melts my heart. I just love him so much and I can't wait to see what's in store for us this month.
As I do every month, I take a photo of Connor with a sign that says his age. Well, apparently that is not in the cards going forward. He would not just sit there and smile with the sign. He HAD to grab it. He grabs everything he sees now and usually puts it right into his mouth. So enjoy my failed attempt at 8 month photos.
I tried to get one without the sign, but he wouldn't smile. He wanted the sign back.
A good shot of his buns in the air. He does it for a second and then goes back down. Hey, it's a start.
This is a video of him doing his cute little scoot back. He loses it at the end, as is pretty common, but if we distract him enough, we can keep him on his tummy for a little while anyway. Enjoy!
